Donnie Nietes knocks out Juan Carlos Reveco in the seventh round to retain his IBF Flyweight World Championship.
Nietes (40-1-4, 22 KO) is the world’s top flyweight, holding the IBF title. The 35-year-old has fought almost all of his career at home in the Philippines, but has made a couple of trips Stateside recently, beating Juan Alejo in 2015 and Edgar Sosa in 2016, both times at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Argentina’s Reveco (39-3, 19 KO) is a legitimate top contender with three straight wins following losing two of three fights, both defeats coming against Kazuto Ioka in 2015, a pair of very competitive fights. He’ll be making his U.S. debut with this fight.
Philippines and four-time world champion DONNIE NIETES, (40-1-4, 22 KO’s) will make the first defense of his IBF Flyweight World Title over 12-rounds against three-time former world champion JUAN CARLOS REVECO, (39-3-0, 19 KO’s) from Las Heras, Argentina. The triple header takes place Saturday, February 24 from The Forum in Los Angeles and will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.
“Fighting in Los Angeles for the third time in front of the great Filipino fans along with fighting on HBO is a great honor for me, said Nietes. “I know how tough Reveco is but I’ll be well prepared to defend my title on Saturday, February 24.”
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to finally fight in the United States and against a great champion in Donnie Nietes,” said Reveco. “I know there will be a huge amount of Argentinian fans at the Forum for the fight and I look forward to winning the IBF Flyweight World Title in front of them.
Nietes, who wished to unify the flyweight titles by fighting any of the current title holders in Zou Shiming (WBO), Kazuto Ioka (WBA) or Juan Hernandez (WBC), has to set aside his plans for now.
“We were looking to unify titles, but now we will have to honor this letter from the IBF first,” Nietes's promoter Michael Aldeguer said who earlier disclosed that he had a scheduled fight for Nietes in Bacolod City in November.
According to the IBF's latest rankings, the No. 1 and No. 2 slots for the flyweight division have remained vacant. Rated No. 3 is Argentina's Juan Carlos Reveco, No. 4 Andrew Selby of Wales and No. 5 Takuya Kogawa of Japan. It appears that Reveco, the highest ranked contender, will most likely be Nietes's mandatory.
