As for Gesta’s new head coach and trainer Freddie Roach, the hall-of-fame mentor knows what his ward is capable of.
“It’s a tough fight but Mercito is a very good boxer, a good southpaw and we’re going to give him hell.”
Fight night won’t be the first time for Gesta and Linares to share the ring, nor will it be the first time for Roach to see the reigning champion work.

Three-weight World Champion Jorge Linares defends his WBA World Lightweight Title on January 27th against Mercito Gesta, hoping to make it six successful defences in a row.
Mercito Gesta will be hoping to derail the 32-year-old’s run of form and become the first man to defeat Linares in five and a half years. Gesta has an impressive record of 31-1 with 17 KOs. His last loss came in 2012 to then-World Champion Miguel Vazquez.
Since that reverse, Gesta is on a six fight unbeaten streak that includes a brutal knockout win over former World Title challenger Martin Honorio. Linares must be weary of the Filipino’s power, and a win will take him one step close to a potential unification with Robert Easter Jr.
What's your fight prediction for this fight?
How the hell Linares won? Worst it's a unanimous decision. It's clear that gesta won the fight. To show that gesta was cheated,in the 12th round,it should have been a knock down for gesta, although not a strong punch and and Linares was a bit outbalance, the fact is Linares was down when hit by a punch. I wonder why they showed in the press releases after the fight that Linares dominated the fight when in fact it's a close fight, if not gesta should have won by a close margin. I think there is an anomaly on that fight.
