The fight between Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero to be held on January 23, 2016 at the Staples Center will be part of the unprecedented welterweight tournament. This is the fight between WBC superlightweight champion Danny Garcia and former WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero will be part of this format.

Danny Garcia, who fought twice each in 2013 and 2014, continued his two-fight-a-year pace in 2015, first earning a narrow majority-decision win over Lamont Peterson on April 11, then dismantling Malignaggi on August 1. Both bouts took place in Brooklyn, New York, and both were contested at catchweights.

Robert Guerrero opened 2015 with a lopsided unanimous-decision loss to top 147-pound contender Keith Thurman on March 7. He returned to the ring three months later, rising from a fourth-round knockdown and barely escaping with a 10-round split-decision win over Aron Martinez.

“Guerrero comes to fight, and he’s faced the best in the sport,” Garcia said. “This is a huge opportunity for me to show why I’m a star, and there’s no better place to do that than in Los Angeles, where stars are born.” Said Guerrero: “If there ever was a fight that defined the word ‘war,' it’s this fight. I guarantee this is going to be a historic fight. A Mexican-American vs. a Puerto Rican-American, it's a bitter rivalry. “Danny Garcia is a great champion, and I know we’re going to put on a tremendous show January 23. It’s going to be fireworks—and I can’t wait!”

Garcia says he feels better at 147 pounds than he did at 140: It’s apparent that it became a struggle for Garcia, listed at 5-foot-8, to make the junior welterweight limit, so even though he was the recognized champion of the division, he began inching his way up in weight 17 months ago. While Malignaggi is past his prime, the fact Garcia stopped him in the ninth round showed that he could carry his power into a heavier weight class. The step-up in weight for the 27-year-old, he said, has been good for him. “When I fought at 140, I was always mean while trying to cut weight. I was never in a good mood. I think that’s why a lot of times I would go in there and just fight,” Garcia said. “But now I’m able to think more; I’m able to be a lot smarter. My punches are crispier and my stamina is better. I’m able to run more miles, train harder, more endurance. I may have had the energy at 140, [but] at 147, I just feel a lot stronger.”

Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero do battle for the vacant WBC welterweight world title in Los Angeles on Saturday. The bout represents Garcia's second at the 140-pound weight category while Guerrero is looking to improve on a recent record which has seen him lose two of his last four fights.

In fact there are questions over whether Guerrero is worthy of a shot at another world title having lost of Floyd Mayweather Jr and Keith Thurman. The 32-year-old was also fortunate to beat Aaron Martinez on points after being knocked down by the American last June.

Garcia is more than deserving of his latest title shot having outclass Paulie Malignaggi on his welterweight debut last year, with an impressive ninth round knock-out. The boxer of Puerto Rican descent was treading water in the super lightweight division but this fight represents the first genuine test of his durability at this level.

The victor is likely to be paired with Briton Amir Khan in a mandatory rematch, with the Olympic silver medallist preferring a shot at the WBC crown rather than the IBF title held by fellow-countryman Kell Brook. Garcia beat Khan via knockout in 2012 and his unbeaten record will take some stopping.

Not a bad fight at all, Garcia is really a great boxer! Some great leather to the face from Guerrero, but I am stunned he thought he won by going from corner to corner after the fight, but maybe he did it for very welcome showmanship.

It might be a cliché, but I can't wait to see Garcia do bigger and greater things :) More offensive too, he needs to be.
