Manny Pacquiao said he is upbeat about unleashing a new version of himself when he fights defending World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Lucas Martin Matthysse of Argentina at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Sunday (Philippine time).
They’ve shrouded their training and fight plans in secrecy. But now that the weigh-in is over, Team Pacquiao and Team Matthysse can unravel the preparations they’ve undergone and what they intend to do in the headliner of Fight of Champions at Axiata Arena on Sunday, July 15.
The fight takes place this coming Sunday July 15 [July 14 in America] in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Matthysse's long-time manager Mario Arano, 65, has 100% confidence that his hard-hitting fighter can beat the Filipino boxing legend.
For Arano, Matthysse is not only his fighter (since 2004 when "La Maquina" turned pro), as well as his friend of many years; but also an inspiration and a beacon of hope for South American boxing.
Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring this weekend when the former world champion takes on Lucas Mattysse in Malaysia.
Now 39, the Filipino is a shadow of his former self but appears unwilling to hang up his gloves and retire.
He was last in action 12 months ago when he was surprisingly outpointed by Jeff Horn in Australia.
Argentinian Matthysse holds the regular WBA welterweight title after knocking out Tewa Kiram in January.
His last defeat came against Viktor Postol in 2015 with the 35-year-old winning 39 of his 43 professional fights.
Both fighters easily tipped the scales below the 147-pound limit for their match, entitled "Fight of Champions." Pacquiao weighed in at 146 pounds while Matthysse registered the scales at 146.7 pounds.
The KO Machine Matthysse will deliver power punches from both hands which won 36 out of his 39 matches by knockout, Diaz said. "All I can say is this...it's not going to be an easy fight for Manny Pacquiao. If Lucas lands any punches on Pacquiao, he will hurt him because he hits real hard," Diaz added.
According to Diaz, Lucas Matthysse is stepping up to the level of opposition and he is fighting against a legend and the Argentinean is in the best shape of his life. "Everything is at stake for him. He is defending his title and secondly, he knows by beating Manny Pacquiao, it will be in the history books."
Matthysse is an exciting fighter with the kind of knock out power that can change a fight in the blink of an eye, like when he impressively destroyed former two division champion Lamont Peterson in 3 rounds back in 2013.
He has been in some exciting fights against former world champions like Zab Judah, Danny Garcia, and Victor Postol only to come up short by losing. In his last fight for the vacant “Regular” WBA welterweight title, apparently trailing on all three Judge’s scorecards, he came from behind to knockout Thailand’s Tewa Karim in the 8th round to win his first world title in his second attempt fulfilling his potential of becoming a world champion.
Pacquiao-Matthysse is clearly a “Cross Roads” fight. The winner of this fight can look forward to big payday fights and/or unification fights with other top welterweights. The loser has to consider retirement. What does Pacquiao have to do to secure victory against Matthysse and vice versa?
The reports are Pacquiao is in excellent shape and training has gone well. Pacquiao has looked good in the gym against sparring partners and his speed and timing are still intact.
Against Matthysee, Pacquiao has to use his speed to dictate the pace of the fight. He must be first in attacking. He must use his jab and throw combinations. He must be in and out using angles and not allow Matthysee to plant his feet to throw his power punches. Pacquiao must disturb Matthysee’s rhythm. He has to use good movement, but also has to at times cautiously fight Matthysse to show that he is not overly concerned about his power. Not only should Pacquiao throw head shots, but he must also throw body shots as Matthysse is susceptible to them. The fighters that beat Matthyssee in the past all outboxed him.
Filipino ring legend climbs the ring anew aiming to recapture the world welterweight championship he first won in 2009, defended thrice, lost twice, regained as many times only to lose it again last year.
Standing on his way is current Argentine World Boxing Association titlist Lucas Matthysse, a powerful puncher who is four years younger than him and, likewise, is considered past his prime.
At 39 and in his 23rd year as a prizefighter, the father of five with wife Jinkee, a former fashion model and Sarangani Vice Governor, Pacquiao has achieved other fighters before him had and will never be attained in the near future – winning world titles in eight weight divisions.
That’s besides crowning himself, too, the first man to win lineal championship in five different weight classes and win a major world title in four of the original title eight categories, also known as the “glamor” divisions – flyweight, featherweight, lightweight and welterweight.
