Jerwin Ancajas fights his 10th-ranked challenger Israel “Jiga” Gonzales Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) in his debut in the United State, he, not only will be defending his International Boxing Federation super-flyweight crown for the fourth time, but, likewise, make a lasting impression on what kind of people the Filipinos are. This gonna be a good fight.

The southpaw Ancajas (28-1-1, 19 knockouts) will be making the fourth defense of his IBF title against Gonzalez. The fighter from Cavite City in the Philippines stopped Jamie Conlan in his last bout on Nov. 18 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Gonzalez (21-1, 8 KOs), who resides in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, stopped overmatched Reymundo Hernandez in his last bout on Nov. 3. His most notable victory was a 10 round unanimous decision over former world junior flyweight titleholder Ramon Garcia Hirales on Oct. 29 of last year.

Ancajas and Gonzalez looked each other in the eye when Top Rank publicist Lee Samuels called them together for a photograph. “It got tense up there,” said Samuels after the fighters stared down, almost nose to nose, without moving an inch for a few seconds. It was Gonzalez who stepped up to Ancajas to nearly bump heads.

“I’m not afraid of him,” said Ancajas. “He thought he could psych me out. I showed him I’m not backing off.” Throughout the media conference, Ancajas was a picture of confidence while Gonzalez seemed nervous. When it was over, Ancajas was called back on stage for a one-on-one interview by Top Rank reporter Crystina Poncher.

Ancajas, 26, has a 28-1-1 record with 19 KOs compared to Gonzalez’s 21-1, with 8 KOs. The Mexican’s only loss was a six-round unanimous decision to Argi Cortes in Tlalnepantla, Mexico, in 2016. Gonzalez said he has no problem in making the 115-pound limit. Asked what are Ancajas’ strengths, he said the Filipino has hand speed, power and he’s aggressive. On his weaknesses, Gonzalez said Ancajas is stiff and walks straight into a punch. Gonzalez said his most dangerous punch is the left hook and he admires the style of 2004 Olympian and three-division world champion Abner Mares.

The fight will be the televised in the United States on ESPN as the co-featured bout underneath WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez against Habib Ahmed, and will be one of 3 fights in 2018 for Ancajas, said MP Promotions matchmaker Sean Gibbons. Ancajas is fresh off his 3rd successful defense, a crushing 6th-round stoppage of Jamie Conlan in Belfast, Northern Ireland a month ago.

Gibbons added that Ancajas is "very close to formalizing a deal" with Top Rank, the company which moved Ancajas' promoter Pacquiao in the United States. Gonzalez of Los Cabos, Mexico, is also fighting for the first time in the States and will be taking a significant step up from his recent competition. The lone win over a recognizable name on the IBF number 10 ranked contender's record is a 2016 decision victory over a shopworn Ramon Garcia Hirales, who was once the WBO junior flyweight titleholder.

The champion is hardly bothered by the tough words of Gonzalez, a Los Cabos Baja, California Sur native, although he’s not underestimating him, either. “He’s a great fighter. He is very good,” said the 26-year-old pride of Panabo, Davao del Norte. “I am excited to get in the ring with him.”

Jerwin is motivated to make an impressive first impression in his first fight in the US. The motivation brings pressure but Jerwin is in control of the situation and will control the fight.

The trend in Jerwin's title defenses is that his challengers don't make it to the end of the scheduled 12-round championship fights. In his 1st defense in January 2017 in Macau, Jose Alfredo Rodriguez was stopped in the 8th round. In the 2nd defense in Brisbane, Australia in July 2017, Teiru Kinoshita reached the 7th round but did not finish it. In the 3rd defense in Belfast, UK in November 2017, Jamie Conlan was saved from further punishment in the 6th round. Jerwin Ancajas says he is like his idol Manny Pacquiao, who happens to be his co-promoter, who has the heart to win, and he also wants to apply that to himself. “I also want to become the best among boxers because I did not get into boxing just for the sake of being in boxing.

Ancajas and the Mexican title contender will trade punches for 12 rounds at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
