Fight Update: Bradley scores UD win over Vargas with scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 115-112
Bradley (31-1-1, 12 KOs) was last in action with a controversial draw against Argentine slugger Diego Chaves last December. Prior to the Chaves fight, the Palm Springs, California native had suffered his first professional loss, to Manny Pacquiao in April 2014— and Tim, 31 years old, will be looking for his first win since, against el joven Jessie Vargas.
Jessie Vargas (26-0, 9 KOs) is coming off back-to-back victories over Antonio DeMarco and an undefeated Anton Novikov since lifting the WBA super lightweight title from Khabib Allakhverdiev, also undefeated at the time, in April of 2014.
"This is what I've been waiting for for years. This opportunity right here, to be shown worldwide, for the world to see what my ability, what my talent is in the boxing ring," Vargas said at a news conference Thursday. "Finding ways to make it difficult for Tim will show them Jessie Vargas is the real deal."
Bob Arum has promoted the fight as a title bout, but Mayweather still holds the WBO welterweight belt. After Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in May, Mayweather indicated he would vacate the title but he is still listed on the WBO's website as the official champ.
"Motivation for me is the Hall of Fame. That’s the motivation for me. I’ve captured four world championships, and this is my fifth opportunity. People are going to say whatever. Critics will be critics. I learned a long time ago that I can’t be worrying about what everybody thinks of me. I know what I’ve done. Five-time world champion [with a win Saturday night]. If that doesn’t say Hall of Fame, I don’t know what will." Bradley said.
The 31-year-old Bradley has done a ton in his career for sure. The Cathedral City native and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are the only fighters in history to earn a win over both Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao.
Bradley could use his speed and boxing acumen to win a relatively easy decision, but he won't go that route. He's going to try to knock Vargas out. Against a bigger puncher, that might be a costly strategy.
It would be an interesting fight for both fighter like Timothy Bradley Jr and Jessie Vargas.
