Fight Result: Vasyl Lomachenko defeated Guillermo Rigondeaux via TKO in round 6
WBO junior lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KOs) defends his title against WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0-1 NC, 11 KOs) in a matchup of two two-time Olympic gold medalists, a first in the history of boxing. Cuba’s Rigondeaux is moving up two weight classes to take on the Ukrainian sensation Lomachenko, whom unlike Rigondeaux, has steadily built a fanbase with his spellbinding performances in the ring.
Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux clash tonight in what promises to be a titanic battle in New York. The super-featherweights are widely considered to be the greatest amateur boxers in history. Both have won world titles as professionals and will hope to put on a mouthwatering display at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Lomachenko will put his WBO belt on the line as his Cuban opponent jumps two weight divisions. Rigondeaux has only fought once against Moises Flores, a fight that was later recorded as a no contest.
Rigondeaux was up on the scale first and weighed-in at a solid 128.4lbs for his junior lightweight debut. RIgo looked to be pretty ripped and solid, carrying the extra weight quite well.
Lomachenko, the reigning and defending junior lightweight champion, hit the scale next and came in at 129lbs even. For as much as as there's been about the size difference (and there is some size difference), both fighters weighed-in within about a half-pound of one another. There's also a rehydration limit, meaning that neither fighter will be able to weigh over 138lbs for the second-day weigh-in.
Both men are dual Olympic gold medallists. Both have won professional world titles and while Lomachenko is younger and bigger than Rigondeaux, Butler feels Rigondeaux also has the power to stop his rival.
“Rigondeaux still might have more power than Lomachenko and Lomachenko’s never fought anyone in his life with less room for error,” Butler said.
“Rigo’ can put him away with one shot to the body or head. I still believe, with the age and weight class factors, it’s Lomachenko’s fight to lose,” he said.
“It’s not that I don’t believe ‘Loma’ is an extraordinary fighter. I just think what makes this contest so extraordinary is the fact that both men, when the bell rings, will be standing across from the toughest opponent of their career,” he said.
“Both men will encounter a skill set and boxing IQ that are among the greatest in the history of the sport.”
The fight presents Rigondeaux an opportunity to cement his legacy as not only one of the sport’s truly great amateur fighters but also one of its best professionally.

Vasyl Lomachenko owned the formerly great and now disgraced Cuban in a fight that didn't remotely live up to our expectations for it. Many of us were anticipating a FOTY; it wasn't even the Fight of the Month.
Can't fault Loma, who was masterful, but it takes two to tango and Rigondeaux just didn't show up. Appalling.
Bring on Mikey Garcia next, please. Garcia is incapable of a single dull minute in the ring and I'd love to see him try to solve the Loma puzzle.
