Jhonny Gonzalez and challenger Gary Russell Jr. have entirely different boxing styles. Gonzalez is a straight-ahead banger with tremendous punching power and Russell is a speedy, fast-handed technician, which should make for an intriguing fight when they square off on March 28, 2015. The only devasted loss from him is from Filipino Gerry Penalosa and from Mexican Ponce De Leon.
In the co-feature, junior middleweights Jermell Charlo (25-0, 11 KOs) and Vanes Martirosyan (35-1-1, 21 KOs) will meet in a battle of top-10 contenders that likely will put the winner in position to challenge for a 154-pound world title.
Gonzalez is a great technical boxer with tremendous punching power. From his loss to de Leon, the fight did not stop him the fight was stopped because of a clash of heads and ponce took the controversial decision. That's why it was also a devastated loss for Gonzalez. And now Gonzalez is back on his feet who won some great boxers like Arce and Mares.
But for Garry, he was getting a lot of exposure and was exposed by the Ukranian Lomanchenko some of these guys are fed and then when they meet a real test they fail that's what happen to Garry. But if Russel dint learn anything by that loss to loma then he is in for a surprise it was shown that even with some boxing ability he was outdone by the Ukranian.
In the interview, "I'm very excited to be coming back to the United States. Every time I have fought on American soil, it has been career-changing for me," Gonzalez said. "In 2012, [Daniel] Ponce De Leon stopped me in Las Vegas and made me reconsider my whole strategy. I came back to the U.S. in 2013 and I stopped an undefeated champion, Abner Mares. Now I'm back and once again I'm facing a tough opponent. "Russell is not an easy test, but I'm confident I'm going to surprise everybody once more. Nobody thought I had a chance in 2013 and I stripped Mares of his title. Food for thought." Added from the Champ.
Russell is a gifted fighter with the physical tools to dismantle most opponents. He found out in June 2014 that Vasyl Lomachenko was not most fighters. The ultra-skilled and athletic Ukrainian outboxed Russell en route to a majority decision win that awarded Lomachenko the vacant WBO featherweight title.
Gonzalez has twice defended the title he won emphatically back in Aug. 2014 when he eradicated Abner Mares with his signature punch in the first round of their championship bout.
“I’m very excited to be coming back to the United States. Every time I have fought on American soil, it has been career-changing for me,” said Gonzalez.
